Natural Resources Management & Sustainable

  • Soil and Water Conservation: Enhancing Agricultural Sustainability

CCJ's Approach: Ridge to Valley Strategy

  • Focus: Enhancing crop productivity through soil fertility improvement and water restoration for irrigation.
  • Geographic Areas: Micro watershed development in areas like Tonto & Chakradharpur (West Singhbhum) and Kuchai & Chandil (Seraikela-Kharsawan).
  • Community Engagement: Emphasis on cost-sharing (in cash or kind) by mobilizing local communities for resource conservation.

Agricultural Interventions

Supporting Marginalized Farmers

  • Targeted Farmers: Small and marginalized families in need of food security.
  • Primary Crop: Paddy.
  • Capacity Building:
    • Technical training for sustainable farming practices.
    • Emphasis on organic manure, mixed cropping, and cash crop cultivation.
  • Support Provided:
  • Resource Planning & Seasonal Calendars for diversified crop production.
  • Introduction of vegetable cultivation, pulses, oil seeds, and nutritional gardens.
  • Focus on women in agriculture through specialized training.

System of Rice Intensification (SRI)

Challenges

  • Rice cultivation in Jharkhand is water-intensive, and the region faces water scarcity due to insufficient rainfall catchment.
  • Water and food security are directly linked, making sustainable rice cultivation crucial.

SRI Campaign

  • Launched in 2010 to introduce System of Rice Intensification (SRI).
  • Initially started with 100 farmers, the campaign now reaches 3500 farmers, with a focus on sustainable rice cultivation.
  • Women, especially, have played a key role in encouraging others to adopt SRI practices.

SRI Benefits

  • Reduced water consumption for rice cultivation.
  • Increased rice yield, benefiting farmers and ensuring food security.
